Rock Calculator

A rock calculator helps landscapers, contractors, and homeowners estimate the quantity of landscape rock or decorative stone needed for a project. By entering the length and width of the area to be covered and the desired depth in inches, the calculator computes the total volume in cubic yards and often also converts it to tons. Rock is typically sold by the ton for bulk purchases or by the bag for smaller projects. Coverage varies depending on rock type, size, and application depth. Common landscaping rock types include river rock, pea gravel, crushed granite, and lava rock.

Using a rock calculator prevents the common problem of ordering too little rock and having to make a second delivery, or over-ordering and paying for unused material. Landscape rock is typically used for ground cover around plants and trees, pathways, drainage solutions, and decorative mulch alternatives. A 2 to 3 inch layer of rock is standard for most applications. Calculators are available on landscape supply websites, big box home improvement stores, and gardening apps. Some tools also estimate cost based on current per-ton pricing. Always factor in a 10 to 15 percent overage when ordering to account for settling, uneven ground coverage, and future touch-up needs in your landscaping project.
